The defendant, Samantha Jane Bradley, was employed in the plaintiff's legal department from 2009 to 2020, latterly as Director of Legal and Trust Management. In October 2020, she was given notice of termination, leading to a separation agreement (HK$24,920,000) and a consultancy agreement (HK$8,000,000 per annum for three years). The consultancy was terminated in June 2021. Between December 2020 and May 2022, the defendant sent over 500 repetitive and hostile emails to the plaintiff, its officers, employees, agents and lawyers (Simmons & Simmons), containing serious unfounded allegations including dishonesty, fraud, conspiracy, modern slavery, harassment, bullying and defamation. The plaintiff, officers and employees suffered significant anxiety, emotional distress and financial loss exceeding HK$10,000,000 in legal fees, with Mr Leigh alone incurring HK$220,000 in medical and legal expenses.
