It seems perfectly plain from the witness statement made by your daughter that there were many reasons why your wife would have been extremely angry with you. However, as those reasons were hearsay and highly prejudicial, the jury were not able to hear them. You gave us your side of the story but you chose to say nothing about hers, and in particular, we were never told why it was that your wife had told you that you were never to touch her again. And in her anger when you did touch her on 12 September 2014, Wong Lei exploded with a torrent of abuse against you and this cost her her life.
You already knew that your marriage was likely to end in divorce, and in fact on the very day that you killed your wife, you had prearranged a meeting with a divorce solicitor in Hong Kong. But earlier in the day, when you heard your wife’s description of you, your bad temper which your daughter spoke about, got the better of you and I think you flew into what many would see as a jealous rage. You knew about her affair and very probably you decided that if you could not have your wife, nobody else would have her either.
What you did to your wife was utterly shocking; no wonder you pretended in this courtroom that you have no memory of what you did to her. I am satisfied on the evidence, and I may say including your evidence, that your wife had been beaten into a state of unconsciousness. You had hit her head many times and the blood spatter tells its own story, along with those broken weapons in the bedroom, including an axe handle and no doubt, a saucepan from the kitchen. You said that you washed her face with a towel twice. Well, after you have done that, if that is what you did, the towel was found wrapped around her neck with a loose sort of tie on one side. She died because of asphyxiation which means in this case that heavy prolonged pressure was placed on her neck. And I am satisfied on the evidence that what you did was to asphyxiate her after she was unconscious. This was a clear case of murder.
There is only one sentence for murder and that is that you go to prison for life.
