COURT:

This tragic tale commenced when you entered into a relationship with Madam Yeung whilst both of you were married to your other partner in Jiangmen. Then you moved to Hong Kong with your daughter, and after that, she commenced working in a 7-Eleven store.

You suspected her of having an affair with the manager there to charm him into giving her a promotion. Things came to a head the day before this incident when you found a condom in the communal rubbish bin amongst your home rubbish. You felt your suspicion had been confirmed. You confronted her that night, but unbeknownst to you at that stage, the person with whom she was having affair with was not the one that you originally suspected. You killed her by chopping her 213 times with a chopper that you fetched from the kitchen.

After the chopping, you did not call for help. You left her in the flat to die. Instead, you took a shower, went to see your daughter, and then back to the mainland. It was under your sibling’s advice that you came back to Hong Kong to surrender to the police.

Having seen some of the most horrible pictures which the jury has been spared to look at, thanks to the sensible handling by both counsel in this case, I have no doubt in my mind at all, with the multitude and magnitude of the chop wounds, this is a ghastly and appalling killing. The scene of the crime speaks for itself. A human life has been wasted, and as your counsel put it, a daughter has lost her mother.

Having been convicted of murder by the jury, whilst noting your background, I have no discretion in the sentence I impose on you. Had I the discretion, that would still be the sentence that I pass. You are sentenced to life.
