----------------- Coram: Huggins, J. Date of Judgment: 27th November, 1972. ----------------- JUDGMENT ----------------- 1. This is an appeal against a sentence of twelve months' imprisonment for theft. A woman passenger on a motor-bus found that her handbag had been opened and a purse removed from it. It had been taken by the Appellant. 2. The Appellant is a man with a large number of previous convictions, some of them for larceny from the person and some for simple larceny. There are sixteen previous convictions. He has been placed on probation twice and it is to be observed that between 1959 and 1964 he did apparently go straight, but since then he has been in prison regularly. 3. On the appeal he has merely said that the sentence is too severe. He appears not to appreciate the seriousness of his conduct. I hope that this sentence will show him that it is serious to steal from other people. It was an entirely correct sentence and the appeal is dismissed. 27th November, 1972. Representation: |
