COURT: I am not going to add to your anguish at this time. There is nothing I need to say because the penalty for your offences is fixed by law.
However, it is clear from the evidence I have heard that your role was a prominent one in this offence. Indeed the whole tragedy arose out of your reaction to the events which took place in the early hours of 20 January 1997. That response, which was played out over the next few days, culminating in the terrible tragic events of the early hours of 25 January 1997 for which you must bear a heavy responsibility, is one which should haunt you for the rest of your life.
You would, no doubt, have remained on the Mainland had it not been that you were detained in 2008 by the Public Security Bureau on the Mainland. The co-operation of the authorities on the Mainland in returning you to justice in Hong Kong after more than a decade on the run is to be applauded.
The sentence of the court is that on each count on the
indictment you be sentenced concurrently to life imprisonment.
