COURT: The defendant was committed to this court for sentence after pleading guilty in Eastern Magistracy to trafficking in 1,761.34 grammes of cocaine.

The facts of the case were that on 11 July 2010, the defendant imported into Hong Kong the drugs the subject of the charge. He had the drugs strapped to his body and in his shoes at the time he arrived in Hong Kong from a flight from Brazil.

I take a starting point of 23 years’ imprisonment. That is enhanced by 2 years to reflect the element of importation. The only mitigation is his plea of guilty. He gets full credit for that.

That reduces his sentence to one of 16 years 8 months’ imprisonment.
