COURT: The defendant has been committed to this court for sentencing after pleading guilty at Eastern Magistracy to an offence of trafficking in 270.55 grammes of ketamine.

The defendant had been seen by a police patrol in the vicinity of Lei Cheng Uk Garden in Kowloon. He was thought to have been acting furtively. He was stopped and searched and the drugs the subject of the charge were found in a plastic bag carried by him. Later, the defendant claimed to have been delivering them to a nearby location for a reward of $500.

I take a starting point for sentence of 8 years’ imprisonment. The only mitigation available to the defendant is his plea of guilty. He gets full credit for that and, on that basis, his sentence is reduced to one of 5 years 4 months’ imprisonment.
