COURT: The defendant, a 24-year-old Ugandan female, has been committed to this court for sentence following her plea of guilty in Eastern Magistracy

to an offence of trafficking in 374.31 grammes of heroin hydrochloride and 50.84 grammes of monoacetylmorphine hydrochloride.

The facts of the case were that the defendant arrived in Hong Kong on board a flight from Kuala Lumpur. Her luggage was searched and, subsequently, she was taken to Queen Elizabeth Hospital where foreign objects were detected inside her body. Eventually, she discharged a number of pellets from her intestines and they were found to contain the drugs the subject of the charge.

I take a starting point of sentence of 15 years’ imprisonment. That is enhanced to 16 years’ imprisonment for the international element.

The only mitigation of substance advanced and that can be advanced before me is the defendant’s plea of guilty. She gets full credit for that.

She is sentenced to 10 years 8 months’ imprisonment.
