COURT: Stand up. I have taken into account everything said on your behalf by your counsel. The offence of which the jury have convicted you is a serious one.

You did not intend to kill or even to cause really serious injury, but as a result of what you did, a human life has been lost and you have not shown any remorse at any stage.

So the mitigation that such remorse might have been, if it had existed, is not available to you. The only real mitigation available to you is your previous good character. But for such mitigation, I would have sentenced you to 9 years’ imprisonment.

Taking such mitigation into account, I sentence you to 8½ years’ imprisonment. You will go to prison for 8½ years.
