You have been convicted of the count in the indictment of conspiracy to throw corrosive fluid with intent to do grievous bodily harm.
You participated in a very, very heinous crime and all because of the temptation of money. This sort of activity is to be strongly discouraged and therefore the sentence will have to reflect the seriousness of the crime.
The criminal record that has been put forward does not make for very encouraging reading, although it is true that in the past most of your crime was for thievery and with the occasional dangerous drugs possession. This will be your most serious crime to date.
As Mr McNamara very correctly pointed out, there is no mitigation in this case. As a former police officer, you must have realised the seriousness of your participation in this crime.
However, I do appreciate that your role in this is less than that of Kay Sik-hong. You were not the mastermind. I agree with Mr McNamara that your role is more similar to that of the person called “Lam Wai-sai”, who got a 15 years’ starting point imprisonment.
So I will sentence you to 15 years’ imprisonment.
